Don’t believe what you see

Juanita Lucas was born to a white, wealthy teenage mother and a poor Haitian father.  After she was born, Lola, Juanita’s mother, asked Hattie, the Black housekeeper, to take Juanita and raise her as her own.  After much soul searching, Hattie agrees.

Hattie and Juanita return to a Brooklyn housing project to live with Hattie’s brother, Herbie.  Hattie and Herbie raise Juanita as if she is black, although her complexion is very fair, her hair is straight, and she has green eyes.

Scooter Morrison is Juanita’s best friend that happens to be homosexual.  They live in the same building and are misfits together.  The girls in the building don’t like Juanita because of her light complexion, “good hair,” and green eyes.  The boys in the building don’t like Scooter because he doesn’t play sports and prefers to sing and dance.

Juanita and Scooter are always together.  If you see one you see the other.  They are inseparable growing up until Juanita meets Conan, a good looking, well built Puerto Rican.  Conan is hard working and dedicated to improving his community.  His best friend, Jorge, is a troubled young man that gets what he wants no matter what the cost.

When Juanita and Conan meet, it’s instant sparks.  Scooter becomes jealous of the attention Juanita is paying to Conan, as does Jorge who becomes insanely jealous of all the attention Juanita is getting from Conan.  Scooter withdraws from Juanita and gets himself into a predicament that he is not sure of how to handle.  Jorge is intent on getting revenge against Juanita for taking Conan away from him.

Ms. Thompson’s novel about love, deception, and revenge is well written.  It’s a fast paced suspense-laden book that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
